WES MONTGOMERY
THE MONTGOMERYLAND SESSIONS
Description:
2 CD set. This release contains the complete classic albums The Montgomery Brothers & Five Others, Montgomeryland and Wes, Buddy & Monk. Also included are all the songs featuring solos by Wes Montgomery from the LPs Kismet and A Good Git Together and, as a final bonus, a rare 1955 Montgomery Brothers version of "Love for Sale" appearing here on CD for the first time ever. Rarely does an LP rate the four star bit for the playing of just one musician on the album, but this one does. The man who does this is the phenomenal Wes Montgomery. Yes phenomenal. I feel that Montgomery is not just the best thing to happen to jazz guitar since Charlie Christian, as Ralph Gleason says, but the best thing to happen to jazz guitar, period! This album can be summed up in three words: Wes Montgomery, yeah! Don DeMicheal Wes Montgomery 1925 1968 is widely recognized as one of the most revered guitarists in jazz history. The Montgomery Brothers and 5 Others marks his recording debut as a leader. Prior to these sessions, he had only worked and recorded with the band of Lionel Hampton since the year 1948. According to annotator Stanley Robertson, it produced outstanding tracks "even in spite of the many handicaps under which the album was recorded a scant few hours of rehearsal time in the sleep worn hours after the ‘five others' had completed playing their regular dates around town, and the losing of Buddy Montgomery's entire charts for the date in the mail, among other things". Our release compiles Wes' two initial albums in their entirety, including the aforementioned The Montgomery Brothers and 5 Others and Montgomeryland, which received a rating of four stars in Down Beat magazine. Also included are extra tracks from those sessions which originally appeared on an LP titled Wes, Buddy & Monk the names of the Montgomery brothers; the tracks were "Hymn for Carl", "Montomeryland Funk" and "Stompin' at the Savoy", and all of the tracks containing Wes' solos from the albums Kismet an LP featuring music from a musical and A Good Git Together issued under the name of singer Jon Hendricks.
