BIRD AT ST. NICK'S COMPLETE
Description:
All the St. Nick's material compiled on one set for the first time ever. One of Parker's most acclaimed live recordings. The current CD contains the complete Bird at St. Nick's album tracks 1 13 plus all of the additional material taped that same evening tracks 14 22. As a bonus, we end our CD with another rare private recording by Bird, including Sarah Vaughan as guest vocalist on one track. The St. Nick's date was privately recorded by tenor saxophonist Don Lanphere with the collaboration of trombonist Jimmy Knepper who was best known for his multiple collaborations with Charles Mingus and for being knocked out by Mingus during a dispute! Knepper also wrote the original liner notes for the first issue of St. Nicks. Bird was relaxed on these recordings. His talent and invention transcends the obvious limitations of the recording quality. In addition to the tunes included on the original album tracks 1 13 of our CD we have also added all of the other material taped that evening, previously appearing separately on a long out of print CD. This is the first time all the St. Nick's material is compiled on just one edition a previous edition titled "complete", combined the original LP with a 1948 live session at the Three Deuces recorded by Dean Benedetti, but didn't include the rest of the St. Nick's material, which constitutes tracks 14 to 22 of the current edition. As a bonus, we end our CD with another rare private recording by Bird taped at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Philadelphia in June 1951 again only Bird's solos were recorded. Sarah Vaughan is a guest star on "This is Always", which is particularly interesting in that it is Bird's only live version of this tune, and his only recording of it apart from the Dial studio takes with Earl Coleman's vocals.
