AT THE FINALE CLUB & MORE

Description:
Rare broadcasts featuring Miles Davis, Kenny Dorham, Joe Albany, Nat "King" Cole, Benny Carter, Buddy DeFranco, Bill Harris & Jimmy Knepper. The Finale broadcast is the earliest existing live recording of Bird and Miles together, as well as the only pairing of the saxophonist with pianist Joe Albany. This collection of five rare broadcasts and private recordings by Bird includes various pairings with other celebrated jazzmen of the era. The Finale Club session comes from acetates made by Billy Berg, whose voice can be heard briefly at the end of "Anthropology". These are the first club recordings of Charlie Parker as the leader of his own quintet, with Miles Davis on trumpet. Interestingly enough, the Finale Club recordings are the second extant recordings in Joe Albany’s discography, preceded only by four titles made for the Guild label with the Georgie Auld orchestra on May 24, 1945. His only other recording during the forties would be an August 1946 date for Aladdin with Lester Young. Trombonist Jimmy Knepper 1927 2003 was one of many West Coast musicians who saw Parker as an idol, and following the example of Dean Benedetti, he privately recorded Bird’s performances as frequently as he could. and was probably also responsible for taping the August 28, 1950 New Brunswick set, in which he also performed. The March 25, 1952 concert at the Loew’s Theatre included many jazz stars like Henry "Red" Allen, Russell "Big Chief" Moore, Billy Butterfield, Buddy DeFranco and Bill Harris. The latter two musician played with Bird in a sextet format. Bird also performed in a quartet set. The two tunes with Lucky Thompson and Kenny Dorham were part of a "Battle of the Bands" presentation by Rudi Blesh and the New York Herald. Our last session has Nat "King" Cole on piano backing Bird, Benny Carter and Willie Smith.
