4 CD set. Ma Rainey was born as Gertrude Pridgett in 1882 in Alabama. When Gertrude was nearly 22 years old 1904 she met an older man, Will Rainey of one of the most famous shows, the Rabbit Foot Minstrels. Ma Rainey recorded exclusively for the Paramount label from 1923 to 1928 cutting 94 sides and some alternate takes these included two duets with banjoist Papa Charlie Jackson. All but four of Rainey's initial 19 titles on record featured Lovie Austin on piano together with her celebrated Blues Serenaders. This excellent little group consisted of Tommy Ladnier on cornet and Jimmy O'Bryant on clarinet, sometimes augmented by Charles Harris on alto sax. Unlike Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey always retained more of a 'country feel' in her vocals which often alluded to the field holler. This was evident whether she used a more urban accompaniment or hired rural style musicians. Some of the first recorded instances of a country/rural blues verse were sung by the Mother of the Blues. |
