LULA REED
I'LL DROWN IN MY TEARS | |
Description:
Discovered by noted bandleader and later her husband, featured on this CD with his orchestra on four songs Sonny Thompson, Lula Reed recorded extensively for King and Federal Records for over 10 years interrupted by a brief sojourn with Checker in the late '50s. This set features every important recording from her first period with King including her original versions of "Rock Love," "Let's Call It A Day," "Bump On A Log" and the now classic "I'll Drown In My Tears." Lula's soft, brittle style of singing was a direct precursor of what evolved into soul music in the early 60s. Echoes of her phrasing can be heard in the recordings of Maxine Brown, Esther Phillips and particularly her contemporary Mable John. |
