SONNY ROLLINS

QUINTET

TOKYO

Description:
There is an extended gap in Sonny Rollins' discography between 1959 and 1962 in which he voluntarily decided not to play in public. In the latter year, he came back and most of the concert recordings from this period feature a front line of Rollins and Don Cherry. For the Japanese tour, however, another horn was recruited to complete the quintet: the rather mysterious trumpeter Reshid Kmal Ali, of whom not much is known. The well known Canadian pianist Paul Bley is also present for this performance. On "Slow Boat to China", Sonny Rollins leaves his musicians behind and performs with the accompaniment of a full Japanese group. Another element of the Japanese tour was the presence of singer Betty Carter, who performed some songs in the concert with the rhythm section. Two songs were captured from this concert. In his biography of the singer, Open the Door: The Life and Music of Betty Carter, William R. Bauer speaks about the tour: "The tenor saxophonist was remerging after a self imposed exile from performing, and he had trumpeter Reshid Kmal Ali, pianist Paul Bley, bassist Henry Grimes, and drummer Roy McCurdy with him. When they arrived at Tokyo International Airport, they were met by a television crew from the Nippon Broadcasting Company as well as a crowd of about three hundred fans, critics, and reporters. Staying in the Tokyo Ginza, the entourage was given the royal treatment. Sporting a Mohican haircut, Rollins was interviewed at a press conference in the hotel's ballroom the day after the group arrived. He and the rest of the musicians met with "thunderous applause" from the 450 or so critics and reporters in attendance."
