Live from Hotel Lincoln Blue Room, December 14, 1938 and Old Gold Melody And Madness Program, February May, 1939 in Los Angeles and New York. Formerly on Natasha 4013. The great Artie Shaw band of 1939! Many feel this band represents the absolute pinnacle of the Swing Era. Those who don't would have to admit that no other swing orchestra ever had a finer saxophone and rhythm section, or a greater array of instrumental and vocal soloists than those to be heard here. Leading off chronologically is a brief, neverbefore issued 1938 broadcast from New York's Hotel Lincoln that was shortwaved to a country club in Lima, Peru! Thought the repertoire is standard, the sound quality is definitely above average. The rest of the material is drawn form Artie's 1938 39 commercial radio series, Melody and Maddnes, which teamed the Shaw band with comedian Robert Benchley in a rather awkward mix of talent. Concluding the CD is a rare full version of Shaw's melancholy theme song, Nightmare, ironically from the last program before Artie's nearfatal illness.
