Description:
This CD contains some Gramercy 5 tracks. Although he must have played "Dancing on the Ceiling" a million times, this one is a very fine version. Shaw's last big band was scorned by a major critic as "another commercially oriented Jackie Gleason type of affair". True, this was not the kind of high powered Artie Shaw outfit known from 1939 or 1945 but a band trying to find a niche in an early 50s market that did not care for swing big bands. Taking no chances, the repertory consisted of well known standards arranged and played in an unobtrusive, smooth manner. Very probably Artie Shaw himself was not pleased with the resulting music and must have considered leaving the scene altogether. However, before doing so, he once again returned to the combo format. |
