CECIL TAYLOR

WITH JOHN COLTRANE

HARD DRIVING JAZZ

Description:
The collaboration between tenor saxophonist John Coltrane and pianist Cecil Taylor was limited to one sole New York studio session, recorded on October 13, 1958 with a quintet led by Taylor. The band also featured trumpeter Kenny Dorham, bassist Chuck Israels, and drummer Louis Hayes. Coltrane and Taylor can be heard here in top form. The saxophonist had just finished his last gig with Monk at the Five Spot the previous month, and was quite comfortable playing over the jagged comping and complex harmonic voicings of Cecil Taylor. In addition to the aforementioned session by Taylor and Trane, this release also contains six cuts from Taylor’s very first recording, a September 14, 1956 New York studio date included here as bonus tracks. Four of the tracks were recorded in a trio setting while two tracks feature Taylor’s first recorded collaboration with soprano saxophonist virtuoso Steve Lacy!
