BOBBY TIMMONS

MOANIN' BLUES

Description:
As a pianist and composer, as well as a member of groups led by Art Blakey and Cannonball Adderley, Bobby Timmons was at the forefront of the soul jazz movement of the late Fifties and early Sixties. The deep soulfulness that marked Timmons's music was no doubt the product of his having grown up playing organ at a Philadelphia church pastored by his grandfather, yet a pronounced blues sensibility was never far from the surface. Among the 11 Timmons compositions in this collection of blues oriented performances are his three most famous: "Moanin'," "This Here," and his original recording of "Dat Dere" later given lyrics by Oscar Brown, Jr.. There's also an inspired reading of Milt Jackson's "Bags' Groove."
