The performances within this two CD set were made between 1935 and 1939 by Fats Waller as radio transcriptions for use as filler between programs. Waller is in his element, talking to the audience as if they were listening to him during a live broadcast or club appearance, mostly playing solo while adding his rhythm on a few tracks. Waller plays a greater mix of original material and standards, instead of the many third rate tunes his Bluebird producers usually pressured him to play; also because he wasn't making 78 rpm discs during these sessions, he is able to flow effortlessly from one number to the next without worrying about the length of any one piece, though only two of the tracks exceed four minutes. Waller's solo interpretations of his own works "Handful of Keys," "Honeysuckle Rose," "African Ripples," and "Alligator Crawl," to name just a few examples and standards "Hallelujah," "You're the Top," and an elegantly introduced "Tea for Two" are consistently rewarding. Unlike many commercial releases made from such sources, the sound quality is excellent, as they have evidently been made from the actually masters or mint condition discs. Fans of swing and stride piano will enjoy this delightful collection by Waller.
