FATS WALLER

THE COMPLETE RECORDED WORKS, VOLUME 1 MESSIN' AROUND WITH THE BLUES

Description:
4 CD set. By Fats' fourteenth birthday it was obvious that his destiny lay in music. He quit school so that he could get a job to finance piano lessons. Before long, he gravitated to a food delivery company that specialised in the discreet supply of booze. This job gave him an entree into Harlem's clubs, where he was able to watch the technique of piano idols like Willie 'The Lion' Smith and James P Johnson. Fats introduced himself to the staff of the Lincoln movie theatre. He was allowed to sit in for both the pianist who accompanied the movies this was the silent era, and for the intermission organist. When the organist fell sick, the fifteen year old Fats stepped in and was a huge success. Shortly after, he was offered the job permanently. His pay was $23 a week. In 1920 Fats left home and moved in with the family of a school friend, Wilson Brooks. Wilson's brother was a popular pianist and an intimate of James P Johnson. Russell introduced Fats to James P Johnson who quickly recognised Fats' talent. Johnson coached Fats, introduced him to the jazz fraternity and got him some gigs. By the time the first two tracks here were cut for OKeh, Fats had married and had already upset his young wife with his constant partying and was a father. The producer on this session, Ralph Peer, had brought the sheet music for Muscle Shoals Blues to the studio so it's possible that this was the first time Fats had seen it. Already the mature artist is on display. So pleased was Peer with the single take of Muscle Shoals that he asked Fats to improvise a B side. Birmingham Blues was the result. Not a bad morning's work. Less than a month later, Fats was back to accompany Sara Martin. Next, comes Alberta Hunter an accomplished singer who's in a different class to Sara Martin. Miracles have been performed to extract what can be heard from old grooves but the effort's worth it. Hunter and Waller are a potent pairing. The second volume in this series was released August 2006. it's available on JSP 928, item code 59514.
