Alabama born Ruth Lee Jones 1924 1963 became, as “Dinah Washington”, “the most influential female singer of the last 40 years” Jazz, The Rough Guide. With her utterly individual style she was hugely successful in the R&B field and, usually with a relaxed jazz backing, also gave many memorable interpretations of popular standards. Sadly her turbulent lifestyle brought her to a premature death. Dinah Washington was known as the Queen Of The Blues, which provides the title for a Living Era programme that contains the very best of her recordings up to 1952. Opening with the three memorable blues she made with Lionel Hampton in 1943 and 1945 Evil Gal, Salty Papa and Blow Top Blues, there are no fewer than 16 R&B Top Ten hits Am I Asking Too Much?, Baby Get Lost, It’s Too Soon To Know etc.. She also gives inimitable versions of such great songs as If I Loved You, Just One More Chance or Stormy Weather, and even Noel Coward’s Mad About The Boy, a hit in the UK.
