ETHEL WATERS

Description:
The importance of Ethel Waters in the history of entertainment during the years 1920 1950 has yet to be fully recognised. Her very versatility, which brought her such gerat acclaim, has in some ways worked against her because as an artist she cannot be conveniently pigeon holed under some such heading as "blues singer", "jazz singer", "dramatic actress", "cabaret artiste" or "film star". She was all of these. Following in the footsteps of the short lived Florence Mills, whose place she took at the Plantation Club in 1925, she was the epitome of the chic black songstresses such as Alberta Hunter, Adelaide Hall, Elisabeth Welch, Josephine baker and Valaida Snow. Probably her greatest importance in artistic terms lies in the fact that from the start of her recording career in 1921 it was plain that she had something different to offer.
