JOHNNY 'GUITAR' WATSON

1952-1955

Description:
This CD includes the vocal sides cut with the Chuck Higgins band in 1951/52, as well as all the Federal recordings from 1953/54 and the first RPM releases from 1954/55. In an effort to snag an early hit, some of these recordings are obviously riding the coat tails of more famous songs: both the Federal re cut of "Motorhead Baby" and "You Can't Take It With You" are rearranged to emulate a funky "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" groove, while Percy Mayfield is the apparent target of "No, I Can't" and "Highway 60" tries it on with both Amos Milburn and Willie Mabon, while "Sad Fool" is a startling Jesse Belvin impression. It is ironic therefore, that Watson's real breakthrough hit in 1955 was an actual cover version, taken from Earl King's swamp ballad "Those Lonely, Lonely Nights".
