PAUL WHITEMAN
THE KING OF JAZZ | |
Description:
Paul Whiteman was certainly one of the most interesting figures in American music during the first half of the previous century. His fame resulted from good musicianship, good showmanship, excellent management and effective promotion and in particular from introducing the new rage "dance music" to audiences all over the world. But not only did Whiteman promote popular music – throughout his career he was involved with concert and classical music, thus attracting attention from "long haired" musicians, composers and conductors alike. Versatility was apparent from Whiteman's earliest recordings, done in August 1920 when his 9 piece band waxed a popular hit Japanese Sandman, the jazz tune Wang Wang Blues and Dance Of The Hours from Ponchielli's opera La Gioconda 1876. The Whiteman band performed and recorded just about every popular song title in the 1920's and his records were then the most important medium to promote these new tunes all over the world. However his recordings also included a great many jazz titles such as Charleston, San and St. Louis Blues all included on this CD and others from a later period when musicians such as Bix Beiderbecke and Jack Teagarden were on his payroll. |
