The essential roots of country music came from the folksongs of Europe, mingled wth the rhythms of Africa. One highly distinctive element was imported from the mountain regions of Switzerland & Austria, the yodel. Crucially, the style was utilized by Jimmie Rodgers in the 1920s & it became a very popular part of country singing.
