THE ZIEGFELD FOLLIES

Description:
Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. was the most flamboyant producer in the history of the American theatre. In a 36 year career on Broadway, he produced 68 shows. Some of them Sally, Show Boat, Rosalie were among the greatest hits of their day. But his legendary reputation is really based on the series of 22 spectacular revues he gave his name to between 1907 and 1931. They were called The Ziegfeld Follies and just to read those words again is to evoke a world of leggy showgirls, opulent scenery and top of the line talent. They were an extravagant combination of American vaudeville with the French Folies Bergere. Living Era’s own Ziegfeld Follies is an utterly unique anthology featuring many of the greatest stars who appeared in the revues over the years, legendary names such as Nora Bayes, Fanny Brice the original 'Funny Girl' who sang Second Hand Rose and My Man, Eddie Cantor and Ruth Etting. Comedy as well as erotic spectacle always played its part in the shows, and routines by such comic masters as W.C. Fields, Will Rogers and Bert Williams are here to be enjoyed too. Some of the great standards of the century were written for the Ziegfeld Follies, evergreens like A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody and Shine On, Harvest Moon.
